Guitar String Knife Raffle

No product

We are delighted to finally share the fruits of our collaboration and our intention behind making this unusual piece - which could become yours for just one pound!

The creation of this knife has taken countless hours and, in so many ways, is a shining example of how far we've come in our own craft skill development. As recipients of the Newby Trust Craft Excellence Award, our first twelve months at Cockpit Studios included significantly subsidised studio space and tailored business support, giving us a chance to invest in the specialist equipment and mentoring needed to develop and build solid foundations for our businesses. We know intimately what a difference this kind of support makes in the early stages of establishing a craft practice and, with your support, we would now like to pay that forward.

All proceeds from this raffle will go directly to Cockpit Studios to fund a new award, the Grant-Turnstone Award - named after two of our mentors, blacksmithing lecturer Juliet Grant and Rosie Heydenrych of Turnstone Guitars. The award will be open to anyone in any craft discipline and will include a studio space for one year and business support.

Purchasing raffle tickets will not only give you the chance of owning this special knife, but you will be contributing to what we know will be a life-changing opportunity for the recipient, so thank you in advance for your generosity.

Paying it forward

Luthier Daisy Tempest and bladesmith Holly Loftus both joined Cockpit Studios, London's only dedicated craft studios, as recipients of the Newby Trust Craft Excellence Award. The award included heavily subsidised studio space and tailored business support for their first twelve months at Cockpit. During that year they were able to invest in the specialist equipment their crafts require and had time to develop their work. Now both firmly footed in their own fields, the pair have decided to raise funds to ‘pay it forward’ and create an opportunity for a future craftsperson who may benefit in the way that they have done.

Together they have collaborated to create a one-of-a-kind chef knife that is being raffled to raise money for a new bursary at Cockpit: the Grant-Turnstone Award, named after their respective female mentors.

Tickets are just £1 and 100% of profits will be donated to Cockpit Studios. You can read more about awards at Cockpit Studios here.

About Cockpit

Cockpit is a social enterprise that bridges the gap between talent and opportunity. Since 1993, Cockpit has provided subsidised and fully-
funded studio spaces in its two London buildings in Bloomsbury and Deptford. Cockpit makers are some of the most celebrated craftspeople in the world, from wood-turners to glass-blowers. Being awarded a place at Cockpit means joining a supportive community of like-minded creatives, and benefitting from in-house business coaching and workshops aimed at helping to develop successful and sustainable businesses. Cockpit’s awards are funded places paid for by generous supporters including the Newby Trust, which is an endowment managed by the descendants of the industrialist HN Smith, and it supports charities in the categories of education, health and social welfare.
